Gray iron castings in ASTM A48 Class 20
Gray iron castings in ASTM A48 Class 20 are intended for general engineering use where tensile strength is a major consideration.
The grade is equivalent with grey irn GB/T 9439-1988 HT150, DIN 1691 GG15, JIS G5501 FC15, NFA32-101 Ft.15D, BS1452 Gr.150, ISO/R185 Gr.15 in China and other countries.
Chemical Composition:
C:3.0~3.6 S:≤0.12 P:<0.15 Mn:0.6~1.0 Si:1.4~2.0
Please note that this chemical composition is not standard, just from working experience of our iron casting foundry.
Mechanical properties
ASTM A48 Class 20 gray iron has a minimum tensile strength of 20,000 psi (140 MPa). Class 20 has a high carbon equivalent and a ferrite matrix.
Grey cast iron ASTM 148 Class 20 can be produced by using the following casting process:
Sand casting

Lost foam casting
The custom casting components in ASTM A48 Class 20 are these unimportant casting parts with low duty or load, such as boiler parts, covers, wheel, base plate, weight plate, pump body, valve body, pipe fittings, etc
Modeling Machine
1.Casting equipment for making sand moulds.
Its main functions are filling sand, filling loose sand into the sand box; compacting sand, compacting sand, compacting loose sand in the sand box through different methods such as compaction, compaction, shock compression, injection pressure, so that the sand mould has the necessary strength in the process of handling and pouring; lifting the mould, using different mechanisms to take the sample out of the compacted sand mould. The moulding machine first appeared in the mid-19th century. In the early stage, the moulding machine was a simple mechanism for manual compaction to take up moulds. Later, compressed air was used as the driving force for shaking and compacting moulding sand. The shock moulding machine appeared in 1890, which improved the moulding efficiency and the precision of sand moulds. According to the different methods of compacting moulding sand, moulding machine can be divided into three types, vibro-compacting type, vibro-compacting type and compacting type.
2. The compact sand moulds can be obtained by compacting the compacted sand moulds with the shock moulding machine. The commonly used is the micro-vibration compacting moulding machine (see figure), which uses the falling table to collide with floating vibrating iron, and then compacts the moulding sand by micro-vibration compacting. Micro-shock is a kind of vibration with high frequency (500-1000 times per minute) and small amplitude (5-25mm) instead of low frequency (60-120 times per minute) and large amplitude. The sand moulds produced by this moulding machine are of good quality and have low requirements for foundation.

Why use cast iron to produce lathe parts?
1. Cast Iron material is competitive than cast steel.
2. Cast iron is with exceptional damping capacity.
Cast iron, specific grey cast iron is used for custom lathe components because of having exptional damping capacity-reative ability of a material to absord vibration.
The damping capacity can help the cast iron lathe bed, lathe support or base stable to assure the lathe machining dimensional accuracy.
3.Cast iron is commonly used for machinery housings or bases due to the stable structure of the material. It is also known for holding its shape when it is subjected to contraction and expansion due to temperature fluctuations.
4.Cast iron consists of Graphite flakes that have sharp edges which act as stress raisers in tension. This shape makes cast iron low in tensile strength and ductility, but it still has high compressive strength.
5. The morphology of graphite as a flake in grey cast iron enables to absorb both compressive and vibrational loads without initiating a crack. In general, vibration can be critical in machinery and can cause an unsatisfactory operation or even failure.

Advantages and disadvantages of casting process
Casting is a manufacturing process in which a liquid material is usually poured into a mold, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, and then allowed to solidify. The solidified part is also known as a casting, which is ejected or broken out of the mold to complete the process.
As a molding process, the basic advantage of casting is that the liquid metal has a small shear stress and be easy to shape.
Advantages of casting process
Wide range of low-prices raw materials, such as scrap, scraped components, chips, etc.
The casting method has obvious advantages of low production costs, compared with other forming processes.
Casting is a producing techquie which poured liquid metal to the required mold. So casting processes can produce very complex shapes, especially the various custom metal components with somplex internal cavities.
Casting processes are not limited in size, weight and production volume, and casn produce a variety of metals or alloys. So casting process is more flexible.
Widely used. 40%-70% in agricultural machinery and 70%-80% in lathe are casting components.
Disadvantage of casting method
If using same material, the mechanical properties of casting components are not as good as the forging parts.
The quality of metal castings is not stable because of too many production process. And the influencing factors are complex. So the casting process is difficult to control.
The casting products easily have various defects and deficiencies, such as pores, shrinkages, pinholes, inclusions, blisters and cracks inside the casting components.
The casting dimensional accuracy is low, compared with machining components.
The working conditions of foundry production are poor. In China, the young people will refuse to work in the poor casting factories.

The factors affecting the quality of cast iron parts
1.Reasonable Design of cast iron parts
When designing the cast iron components, the geometry and size of iron casting parts shoud be determined by the working conditions and the metal's properties.
And the disgner should consider cast iron and casting method when drawing the cast iron parts to avoid or reduce the casting occurrence of casting defects, such as sergregation, deformation, crackings, etc.
2. Suitable casting method
Our engineers will pick out the most suitable casting method when producing iron casting parts.
The structure, weight and size of cast iron parts, cast iron characteristics, the appropriate parting surface and shape, core making method, reasonable setting of casting ribs, cold iron, riser and other casting system will affect the quality of cast iron components.

3. The quality of raw material
The quality of metal charge, refractory, fuel, flux, modifier and foundry sand, sand binder, paint and other substandard materials will affect the casting quality. They will cause casting defects, such as pores, pinholes, slag inclusions and sand sticking in cast iron components.
These bad appearance quality and internal quality, when severe, will scrap iron castings.

Main reasons:
1. The sand in the cavities is not clean.
2. Before pouring the liquid metal to the mold, the riser, sprue, runner have some sand.
3. The molding sand are not sufficient enough. So the sand will be drop, which caused by the external force.
4. The casting process is not continuous or the pourcing speed is too slow, so that the sand in the cavity can not float smoothly to the riser and stay in the lower temperature.
5. The temperature is too high, the pouring speed is too fast, and the sprue or runner is rolled into some sand.
